Huge solar farm covering 38 fields planned for Pontypridd

A significant development is on the horizon in Pontypridd, as plans are underway to construct a massive solar farm covering 38 fields of farm land. This project, spearheaded by Renantis UK Ltd (recently rebranded as Nadara), is proposed to be situated at Bryntail Farm in Bryn Tail Road, Pontypridd. The solar farm is set to have a substantial impact, with the potential to power approximately 12,000 households once operational.

The application for this solar farm has been formally submitted to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) for consideration. If approved, the solar farm would have a combined capacity of up to 39.9MWp (megawatt peak), capable of generating around 43,000MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity. This output is estimated to be sufficient to meet the energy needs of 12,000 homes. The proposal encompasses 38 agricultural fields spanning approximately 70.9 hectares, currently utilised for livestock farming, with plans to install 1,333 module racks of solar panels.

According to the planning statement accompanying the application, only about 2.15% of the site would be dedicated to development, while a significant 97.75% would be allocated for landscape enhancement and biodiversity improvement. Should the project come to fruition, it is projected to operate for 35 years, at the end of which all infrastructure would be removed, and the land reinstated for agricultural purposes. The developers anticipate that this initiative will result in an annual reduction of around 18,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equating to 630,000 tonnes over the project’s lifespan.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the solar farm is earmarked to provide financial contributions to the community of Pontypridd. The proposal outlines a commitment to allocate up to £581,000 over the project’s duration for reinvestment into local initiatives and projects. The site is strategically located north of Rhydyfelin, northeast of Glyntaff, and east of Pontypridd town centre.

The comprehensive plans for the solar farm include the establishment of a substation compound, transformer stations, internal access tracks, landscaping, biodiversity measures, boundary fencing, security features, CCTV posts, a monitoring house, storage containers, access improvements, and ancillary infrastructure. The development has the potential not only to facilitate renewable energy generation but also to contribute to the local economy and sustainability efforts in the region.

As the application progresses through the approval process, it signifies a step towards harnessing clean energy sources and reducing carbon footprints within the community. The proposed solar farm in Pontypridd underscores the commitment to transitioning towards sustainable energy practices and fostering environmental stewardship at a local level.
