Huge search after fisherman goes missing off Welsh coast

In a massive sea search, a fisherman who went missing off the Welsh coast prompted a multi-agency operation involving lifeboats, police, fire crews, and a coastguard helicopter. The search off Cemlyn and Wylfa head, Anglesey, began at 3.30am on Monday. RNLI Moelfre volunteers, along with coastguard teams from Cemaes and Holyhead, North Wales Police, the fire service, and the Coastguard rescue helicopter participated in the search. Following about three hours of thorough searching using thermal imaging cameras, flares, and spotlights, the fisherman’s belongings were found near the Cemlyn lagoon.

The missing fisherman was later located, reportedly “lost and under the influence of alcohol but otherwise safe and well,” according to North Wales Live. Moelfre RNLI reported that the all-weather lifeboat ‘Kiwi’ (ALB) was involved in the search after a friend returned to the car and found no sign of the fisherman. Despite the challenging coastline, the search teams utilised various resources such as night vision, a thermal imaging camera, searchlights, and white parachute flares. It was confirmed that the fisherman’s belongings and fishing equipment were discovered by the lagoon in Cemlyn.

The search effort showcased collaborative multi-agency teamwork, with Moelfre lifeboat coxswain Vince Jones commending the volunteers for their efforts. Jones emphasized the importance of having appropriate equipment while fishing and the need for means to call for help, cautioning against consuming alcohol or drugs near the water. Fortunately, in this instance, the missing individual was found safe and well. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with activities near the coast and the significance of safety precautions for those venturing out to sea.

The successful outcome of the search highlights the dedication and coordination of the search teams involved, demonstrating the importance of swift and effective response in maritime emergencies. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in water activities and the necessity of taking necessary precautions to ensure personal safety while enjoying the Welsh coast.
