Plans to transform the Welsh tourist attraction, Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, have been unveiled. The project includes the development of holiday lodges and camping facilities on the castle grounds. Alongside these, there will be an all-weather car parking facility, a restaurant, a shop, an education centre, and an exhibition space. The highlight of the development is the introduction of a “high-quality, sustainable, and landscape-led holiday lodge development”, which will feature a variety of lodges, touring pitches, and seasonal bell tents.
The comprehensive proposal aims to diversify revenue streams and ensure the long-term sustainability of the estate, which comprises a Grade I listed castle and surrounding grounds. Owner Nigel Ford envisions the addition of new facilities as a way to secure the future and legacy of Fonmon Castle. The site will have 89 bases for lodges, 11 tourer pitches, and 20 locations for seasonal bell tents. These initiatives are also intended to support ongoing rewilding and ecology projects across the wider estate, including a collaborative excavation project with the University of Cardiff’s archaeology team.
Fonmon Castle transitioned into a visitor attraction in 2020 under the ownership of businessman Mr Ford. From being a private residence, the castle now offers a range of attractions such as a dinosaur park, gardens, woodland walks, story trails, and a recreated medieval village. Throughout the year, the castle hosts various events, including vintage car shows, concerts, and seasonal festivities like Halloween and Christmas celebrations.
The recent plans for development follow a previously approved application for new access from the B4265, with technical design currently in progress. Mr Ford expressed enthusiasm for the future of the estate, citing significant archaeological discoveries on-site over the past four years. He highlighted the community support received and emphasised collaborations with local businesses and schools, as well as conservation initiatives on the estate.
The impending planning application signifies a new chapter for Fonmon Castle, aiming to improve access, offer sustainable lodging options, and enhance on-site attractions. The proposed education centre will play a part in sharing archaeological insights gained from Fonmon Castle. With a focus on a bright and sustainable future, the developments seek to benefit both the castle, its estate, and the local residents and workers.
