A significant development project is in progress in Tonypandy, Wales, with a block of flats, Mitchell Court, being demolished to make way for a new residential complex. The building, which was once home to 93-year-old Iris Ware, is being torn down as part of a transformation plan for the area. Iris Ware, who was one of the last residents in the ageing block of flats, described feeling isolated in the deteriorating and vacant-looking building that was earmarked for demolition due to its dilapidated state.
The demolition process involves the removal of asbestos in the building, which has already been completed, and the subsequent tearing down of the block of flats. A planning application has been submitted by Asbri Planning on behalf of Trivallis Housing Association, the current owner of the property. The proposal aims to replace Mitchell Court with a new development comprising 17 one-bedroom flats, 25 two-bedroom flats, and eight semi-detached houses. Trivallis is a prominent registered social landlord in Wales, providing accommodation in RCT.
Additionally, the neighbouring former Children’s Services Building and the old Con Club site are also slated for demolition as part of the regeneration project. The new development plans include provisions for creating 32 car parking spaces for residents and establishing a new access road to the site. The development blueprint features designs for open spaces and green areas, along with a courtyard garden space for the community to enjoy.
Addressing concerns about the allocation of homes, Trivallis clarified that all residences will be assigned through the council’s housing register based on local requirements, following the standard procedure. The housing association emphasized that details regarding the allocation process were communicated during the consultation phase to provide transparency and clarity to the public. Trivallis aims to facilitate the construction of a modern residential complex that will enhance the living standards of the area’s residents and contribute to the regeneration of Tonypandy.
