Strictly Come Dancing star, Chris McCausland, has captured hearts as the first blind contestant on the popular BBC show. At 47 years old, Chris is gearing up to showcase his dance moves alongside partner Dianne Buswell in their live debut on the dance floor, much to the excitement of fans. However, Chris’s journey to the Strictly stage has been marked by a significant challenge he faced 25 years ago when he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 22. This hereditary condition results in progressive vision loss due to cell degeneration in the retina, gradually leading to blindness.
In an emotional interview with the i newspaper, Chris shared that the condition runs in his family, with his grandmother and mother also affected. Reflecting on the gradual loss of his sight since birth, Chris noted how his other senses have become heightened, though debunking the myth that losing sight enhances hearing. Despite his blindness, Chris mentioned that he can still perceive light and space, allowing him to navigate his surroundings to some extent.
Chris, who previously documented his journey into blindness on Channel 4’s ‘Scared of the Dark’, is now achieving a milestone as the first blind contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Speaking candidly about his experience, Chris admitted to “winging it” alongside his dance partner Dianne, who has never taught a blind person before. Embracing the learning process with flexibility, Chris emphasised the importance of figuring things out together, even if it involves making mistakes and having a good laugh along the way.
During rehearsals, Chris highlighted the challenge of adapting to dance shoes, especially as he struggles to feel the floor through them. While producers had suggested involving a specialist to assist with his training, Chris opted to navigate the process with Dianne independently, believing that their shared journey would make for a more engaging experience both on and off the dance floor. Despite the obstacles, Chris’s resilience and determination have set the stage for a groundbreaking performance on Strictly Come Dancing.
Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One at 7pm, promising viewers a unique and inspiring display as Chris McCausland shatters barriers and dances his way into the hearts of millions.
