Many couples find themselves struggling with issues such as snoring, duvet-hogging, and mismatched sleep styles, leading to a lack of “sleep compatibility.” Surprisingly, a study of 2,000 adults revealed that a third of Brits face challenges in getting a good night’s sleep due to these common problems. In fact, one in five individuals even opt for sleeping separately to ensure a restful night.
According to the survey, 30% of participants admitted to experiencing difficulties achieving quality sleep due to differences in sleep patterns or disruptions caused by their partner’s habits such as stealing sheets or restlessly moving in bed. Interestingly, only 17% of respondents claimed they never lose sleep because of their significant other. A study conducted by OnePoll.com found that on average, respondents lose 48 minutes of sleep each night due to their partner, equating to around 24 full nights of missed rest per year. For 17% of the participants, this disruption was closer to two hours per night.
Radio presenter and comedian Chris Stark engaged with couples on the streets to gather insights into their “sleep compatibility” challenges. Chris humorously remarked, “We all like to think we’re a dream to share a bed with, but let’s be honest – most of us are probably a bit of a nightmare.” Despite the sleep disturbances caused by partners, the research also highlighted other factors affecting Brits’ sleep quality. Nearly a quarter of participants described their mattress as only “okay,” with 44% complaining of back pain and 13% citing noisy springs as a major inconvenience.
Concerns around temperature and noise also emerged in the study, with almost half of respondents struggling to sleep in rooms that were too hot or too cold. Additionally, 36% reported being disturbed by external noise, and 28% expressed dissatisfaction with their pillows’ comfort levels. Dreams, the company behind the study, recognised the impact of poor sleep on mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. To address these issues, Dreams introduced a ‘Sleepmatch’ service to help couples identify suitable mattresses based on their sleep preferences.
The survey findings shed light on the challenges many couples face in achieving a peaceful night’s rest together. From mattress preferences to temperature needs, the research emphasised the importance of addressing sleep incompatibility for better overall health and happiness. If you find yourself struggling to sleep due to your partner’s habits or external factors, making small adjustments to your sleep environment could make a significant difference.
