The Home Office has cracked down on people smuggling rings, resulting in the arrest of more than 30 individuals across the United Kingdom. Immigration enforcement teams collaborated with the National Crime Agency, UK police forces, and international partners to apprehend 31 people in various locations such as Belfast, Liverpool, Luton, and Scotland over a three-day operation.
The crackdown included checks at major ports, airports, and road networks, leading to the confiscation of £400,000 in criminal cash and 10 fraudulent identity documents. Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Dame Angela Eagle, expressed the government’s firm stance against criminal organisations exploiting vulnerable individuals, endangering lives, and offering false promises of a better life in the UK.
“These gangs show no regard for human life, charging exorbitant fees, and subjecting desperate individuals to illegal and perilous situations,” Dame Eagle stated. The Home Office’s immigration enforcement inspector, Jonathan Evans, commended the operation’s success as a clear message to smuggling gangs that they will face serious consequences for breaking the law.
Evans emphasised the ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal groups and prevent abuses of the Common Travel Area and UK borders, highlighting the collaboration with various agencies and international counterparts. The operation’s success underscores the government’s commitment to dismantling the business models of smuggling gangs and ensuring the safety and security of the UK’s borders.
