A terrifying incident unfolded at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park near Berwick-upon-Tweed, where holiday park fun quickly turned to fear and distress as a clash between two families escalated into violence. The Newcastle Crown Court heard that the chaotic scene unfolded in a dining area, with dozens of people present at the time. According to reports from Chronicle Live, the altercation involved around 20 individuals and was captured on CCTV.
The court proceedings revealed that during the altercation, children present at the scene were left clinging to their parents as the situation escalated. John Ward, not initially involved in the conflict, reacted impulsively upon witnessing security staff escorting his mother out of the area. Ward admitted to throwing a punch, attempting to break a glass bottle, and smashing a gin glass during the disturbance.
Prosecutor Matthew Hopkins described the events as a fight between two families, exacerbated by the involvement of multiple individuals. The CCTV footage showed moments of physical altercations, with Ward reacting aggressively to the situation unfolding. Children in the dining area were visibly upset, with some seen crying and seeking comfort from their parents.
Ward, 23, with a history of previous convictions, pleaded guilty to charges of affray and possessing an offensive weapon. He was sentenced to 18 months, suspended for the same duration, along with 150 hours of unpaid work and a requirement to complete a “thinking skills programme.” Judge Gavin Doig emphasised the seriousness of the incident, noting the distress caused to members of the public, both young and old, by Ward’s actions.
In his defence, Liam O’Brien stated that Ward’s actions were a result of witnessing his mother being mistreated, leading him to react impulsively but disproportionately. O’Brien portrayed Ward as an immature individual who was trying to protect his mother in a misguided manner. The court acknowledged the impact of the incident on those present, highlighting the fear and distress experienced by the children in the dining area.
The sentencing highlighted the consequences of Ward’s actions and the importance of maintaining composure in challenging situations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential ramifications of resorting to violence in moments of conflict, especially in environments where families and children are present.
