Health Board Approves Demolition of Redundant Building at Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend
Approval has been granted by Bridgend Council for the demolition of a “redundant and dilapidated building” within the grounds of Princess of Wales Hospital. The building, located on the eastern fringe of the hospital, previously served as a nurses’ teaching block but has remained empty and derelict for approximately 15 years. Described as a small, flat-roofed wooden-framed structure with fibreglass insulation, the building’s condition has severely deteriorated over the years.
According to reports, the building’s roof is in a poor state, with significant leaks, warped and exposed boards, and areas where the ceiling has collapsed, revealing wooden beams. The local planning authority approved the demolition plans on October 8 after a full planning application was submitted in September by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.
The decision to demolish the building follows a recent critical incident that led to the closure of an entire floor of the hospital due to extensive roof damage caused by heavy rainfall, resulting in leaks throughout the building. The closure has impacted the hospital’s operations, including the surgical theatre, with the maternity unit also shutting down in September 2024 for urgent maintenance work that is expected to last for 12 weeks.
The Princess of Wales Hospital is currently navigating the effects of these closures as they work towards maintaining essential services for patients. The demolition of the redundant building is a necessary step to ensure the safety and efficiency of the hospital’s facilities. The local community will be informed about any further developments regarding the hospital’s operations.
