Gen Z see coffee machines as essential – here’s what every age group can’t live without

In a recent study carried out on 2,000 adults, it was discovered that the younger generation, specifically Generation Z, now considers coffee machines, hair tongs, and air fryers as essential items in their daily lives. The survey highlighted that younger individuals are less likely to view these appliances as luxuries, with only 41% of Gen Z participants categorising coffee machines as such, in contrast to two thirds of Boomers and Gen X. Similarly, just 30% of Gen Z regarded hair tongs as non-essential, while 55% of Boomers held this perspective. Moreover, only a third of Gen Z deemed air fryers a necessity, as opposed to 47% of the older demographics.

Despite these varying opinions across generations, the fondness for hot beverages remains unwavering in Britain, with half of all adults identifying the kettle as the primary appliance they reach for each morning, surpassing the fridge at 11%. The study, commissioned by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) for Register My Appliance Week, sheds light on the generational shifts in attitudes towards household gadgets. AMDEA CEO Paul Hide expressed, “We are clearly a nation of appliance lovers,” noting that younger generations exhibit particular excitement towards the future of smart technology.

However, Hide also voiced concerns regarding appliance safety, highlighting that millions of devices remain unregistered, making them untraceable in case a safety repair is required. Discussing the essential appliances at home, the washing machine emerged as the top priority, deemed essential by 62% of respondents. This was followed by the fridge, oven, and freezer. While preferences for appliances vary among age groups, there is a shared emphasis on practicality and energy efficiency.

The significance of energy efficiency and eco-friendliness in appliance purchases was evident, with 80% of adults considering energy efficiency crucial and 65% prioritising the eco-friendliness of products. The top 10 devices Brits deemed indispensable included the washing machine, fridge, oven, freezer, kettle, vacuum cleaner, air fryer, dishwasher, coffee machine, and toaster. These findings emphasise the evolving landscape of household essentials and the increasing focus on sustainability and efficiency in appliance choices.
