Gavin And Stacey’s Nessa to Present Shipping Forecast on BBC
Ruth Jones, best known for her role as Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins on Gavin and Stacey, is set to lend her voice to Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast on New Year’s Day. This special occasion marks the centenary celebration of the forecast’s first broadcast on the BBC back in October 1925. Joining Ruth Jones in this commemoration are other notable personalities like Julie Hesmondhalgh, Stephen Fry, Adrian Dunbar from Line Of Duty, and sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur.
In a statement, Ruth Jones shared that the Shipping Forecast holds a special place in Nessa’s heart due to her past experiences working on the high seas. The forecast was always a crucial tool for Nessa, reflecting its significance for her character. This event comes after the heartwarming final episode of Gavin and Stacey, which garnered impressive Christmas ratings and saw Nessa’s character finding her happily ever after with Smithy.
Alongside Ruth Jones, a lineup of diverse talents will also participate in reading historic shipping forecasts, including comedian Paul Sinha, poet Imtiaz Dharker, and writers Ian McMillan and Val McDermid. The schedule will feature Trevor Harrison, known for voicing Eddie Grundy in The Archers, reading a forecast from a significant date in his character’s journey. Dame Ellen MacArthur will also take part, reflecting on her record-breaking solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005.
The Director of Speech and Radio 4 Controller, Mohit Bakaya, expressed his excitement about the upcoming programming to honour the Shipping Forecast’s 100 years on the BBC. The Shipping Forecast not only provides crucial information for seafarers but also symbolizes a cherished tradition for Radio 4 listeners. The dedicated day will include a range of programmes celebrating this “national poem” that resonates with audiences across the UK.
BBC presenter Paddy O’Connell will present a documentary titled “A Beginner’s Guide,” delving into the history of the forecast, while historian Jerry Brotton will explore the maritime influences shaping Britain in an Archive On 4 segment. Produced by the Met Office for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Shipping Forecast originated as a weather bulletin in 1924, later transitioning to the BBC in 1925. This year marks a significant milestone for the forecast, underscoring its enduring legacy.
As the Shipping Forecast’s centenary unfolds, viewers can look forward to a day of engaging and insightful programming that pays tribute to this iconic feature of British radio. With a diverse lineup of contributors and a rich history to explore, this special occasion promises to captivate audiences and highlight the lasting impact of the Shipping Forecast.
