Garden expert says treat your lawn to one natural item this autumn and you’ll be rewarded

A garden expert has shared a valuable tip for homeowners looking to maintain a lush and healthy lawn through the winter months. Kellie Parry, a gardening guru with the Sustainable Living Association, recommends using a natural and cost-effective homemade fertiliser to feed and nurture your grass this autumn. As temperatures start to drop, it becomes crucial to strengthen the root system of your lawn by providing it with essential nutrients to withstand the harsh winter conditions and thrive in the spring.

Parry suggests using Epsom salts as a key ingredient in a DIY lawn fertiliser. Epsom salts are rich in sulfur and magnesium, both vital compounds that grass and other plants require for optimal growth. Magnesium plays a crucial role in photosynthesis, energy storage, and nutrient absorption in plants. A deficiency in magnesium can result in yellowing, patchiness, and thinning of the grass. By using Epsom salts to feed your lawn, you can address any nutrient deficiencies in the soil, ensuring that the grass remains healthy and vibrant as the colder weather sets in.

To apply Epsom salts to your lawn, simply mix one tablespoon of Epsom salts in a gallon of water and evenly distribute the solution across your lawn. The best time to apply this homemade fertiliser is when the grass is still actively growing, ideally in early October, allowing ample time for the nutrients to be absorbed before winter arrives. Typically, one application of Epsom salt in the autumn is sufficient to keep your lawn in good condition. Avoid fertilising the grass once the first frost hits, as the grass enters dormancy and stops actively absorbing nutrients.

However, if your lawn shows signs of nutrient deficiency later in the season, a second application of the Epsom salt solution can be done in late October or early November, about four weeks after the initial dose. By taking the time to nourish your lawn with magnesium-rich Epsom salts now, you can help it remain robust and healthy throughout the winter, ensuring a vibrant and flourishing lawn in the spring of 2025.

Investing in your lawn’s health now can yield beautiful results in the future, providing you with a lush, green carpet of grass that will be the envy of your neighbourhood. So, consider treating your lawn to a natural boost this autumn, and reap the rewards of a stunning garden in the seasons to come.
