We loose another restaurant in Cardiff due to astronomically high rates, amenities & costs
Cardiff’s well-loved brunch spot, Society Standard on Whitchurch Road, has sadly announced its closure, marking another casualty in the wave of restaurant and bar shutdowns in Cardiff in 2024. The venue, known for its meals, desserts, and drinks, conveyed the somber news on Instagram, stating, “We’re sad to say that as of today we are switching off the neon for the last time. The reasons are the same as all the other closures for the length and breadth of the country. We’d like to focus on the positive and say thank you to every single person who has supported us.”

“We feel that we have really been a ‘local’ for so many, which is exactly what we wanted. We know that we have started relationships and friendships time and time again. We have had wonderful, dedicated staff who’ve been with us on this journey, and we thank them all. Godspeed to all those indies that are still fighting on, but for us, it’s game over,” they added.
The closure of Society Standard has resonated with the community, with many expressing their sadness over the news. As one customer shared, “Game over for popular Cardiff brunch spot in 2024 wave of shutdowns” & “Absolutely gutted, our favourite local,” while another lamented, “Oh no, that’s a disaster for the street.” The restaurant, which opened its doors on Whitchurch Road in 2016, was the collaborative venture of friends Tim Moores and Dom Wood, also behind the Urban Standard and North Street Standard in Bristol.
