Four-year-old boy died of ‘traumatic brain injury’ in garden while playing after school

A tragic incident claimed the life of a four-year-old boy, Maldwyn Gwern Evans, who suffered a traumatic brain injury while playing in his garden after returning from school. The heartbreaking event took place at his home in Blaenesgair Farm, Tynreithin near Tregaron on June 20 this year. An inquest into his death was conducted at Aberystwyth Justice Centre, revealing the details of the accident.

Gwern was playing in the garden with his sister after school when his mother, inside the kitchen, heard a ‘thud’ from outside. Emergency services, including Wales Air Ambulance, arrived at the scene, but despite CPR efforts, Gwern was pronounced dead. A post mortem conducted by Dr. Andrew Bamber confirmed a significant head injury as the cause of death. The inquiry revealed that Gwern had been playing with an antique roller, possibly pushing it from behind, when the tragic incident occurred.

The hearing highlighted that there were no witnesses to the accident, and the exact circumstances leading to the head injury remained unclear. The coroner’s report mentioned that the most probable scenario was that Gwern struck his head on the patio while handling the roller. However, no suspicion of foul play or neglect was found surrounding the incident. Gwern’s family, devastated by the loss, expressed their profound grief and thanked the community for their support during such a challenging time.

Concluding the inquest, the coroner described the incident as a profound personal tragedy, attributing Gwern’s death to an accidental head injury. The family was acknowledged for their unimaginable loss, with the coroner extending heartfelt condolences. A tribute from Maldwyn’s family described him as a cherished son and brother, remembered for his lively personality and love for farming. They requested privacy to mourn their loss, emphasising the impact of the tragedy on their lives and the community.

The heartbreaking loss of Gwern serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety, particularly for young children. The community stands in solidarity with the Evans family during this difficult period, offering support and condolences as they navigate through their unimaginable loss. May Gwern’s memory live on as a beacon of joy and love in the hearts of those who knew him.
