Former Wales Captain Advocates for Radical Changes in Welsh Rugby
Former Wales captain, Gwyn Jones, has recently called upon the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to make significant changes by reducing the number of professional rugby regions in Wales to three and moving towards centrally contracting all players. This proposal comes following Wales’ successive Wooden Spoon wins and amidst discussions about the competitiveness and sustainability of Welsh rugby.
Jones, along with other former internationals like Sam Warburton, has stressed the importance of focusing talent by reducing the number of professional clubs in Wales. Despite these suggestions, WRU CEO Abi Tierney has expressed the intention to stick with four regions, with plans to increase the salary cap to £6.8 million by 2029.
During a recent appearance on S4C’s rugby debate programme, Pawb a’i Farn, Jones emphasised the need for substantial changes within Welsh rugby to ensure its future success. He highlighted the financial challenges Wales faces in competing with countries like France and England, and proposed a model of central contracts to streamline operations and enhance control.
Jones expressed his vision for a complete overhaul in the current structure, advocating for centralised control of player contracts under the union’s jurisdiction. He argued that the existing regional model, reliant on wealthy individuals, may not be sustainable in the long term. Instead, he proposed a more unified approach where the union oversees all aspects of player management.
The former Wales captain underscored the necessity of ensuring transparency and clear communication with stakeholders throughout any transition.
