Former Strictly Come Dancing star will not face violence charges

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Artem Chigvintsev will not be facing violence charges after being arrested in California on suspicion of domestic violence, US authorities have confirmed. The professional dancer, who won the BBC competition in 2010 with celebrity partner Kara Tointon, was taken into custody last month in Napa County Jail. The circumstances leading to Chigvintsev’s arrest were not immediately clear, but he posted bail of 25,000 dollars (£19,000) at that time.

Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley stated that her office has chosen not to pursue criminal charges against the TV personality following a comprehensive review of the investigation and evidence. Haley emphasized the importance of filing charges only when supported by sufficient evidence, stressing the necessity to prove criminal charges ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’. She highlighted that ethical considerations govern the decision-making process in such cases.

While the Napa County District Attorney’s Office usually refrains from issuing press releases in instances where charges are not filed against individuals, an exception was made due to the significant media attention that Chigvintsev’s arrest had garnered. The Russian dancer first appeared on Strictly during the show’s eighth series in 2010, partnering with ex-EastEnders actress Tointon. Their on-screen chemistry spilled over into a real-life relationship that lasted for several years.

Chigvintsev continued his success on the show, reaching the semi-final in 2011 with actress Holly Valance and later partnering with TV personality Fern Britton in the 2012 series. Subsequently, he danced with Coronation Street star Natalie Gumede in 2013, securing the runner-up position. The dancer then transitioned to the US version of the show, Dancing With The Stars, where he partnered with WWE star Nikki Bella in 2017, whom he later married. The couple welcomed a son in 2020.

Representatives for Chigvintsev have not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
