A former cafe on a busy Cardiff road, which has been closed for years, is undergoing transformation and will soon reopen as a cafe and craft ale bar called The Birch Brewhouse. Situated on Caerphilly Road in Birchgrove, the establishment will serve as a cafe during the day and a craft ale bar in the evening. The owners, also behind popular pubs in Cardiff like The Butcher’s Arms in Llandaff and The Black Cock Inn in Caerphilly, have agreed to conditions to address potential noise concerns.
The decision to repurpose the building, previously home to Coffee and Cakes, has received mixed reactions. While one local councillor sees it as a positive addition to the area, there was opposition from residents concerned about noise and anti-social behaviour. Despite these initial reservations, many have expressed excitement about the new venture, particularly parents seeking a gathering spot near the local school.
James Lovegrove of JL Pub Company Ltd emphasized the building’s central location in Birchgrove and highlighted the community’s need for a vibrant hub. The owners, aiming for an October opening, are determined to offer a unique space in line with the area’s character. Jen Lovegrove acknowledged the demand for something different in the neighbourhood, indicating a focus on creating a welcoming environment loved by all.
Although some residents fear the potential impact on the peaceful residential area, Cardiff Council is working to address concerns and balance community needs. Cllr Graham Hinchey acknowledged resident apprehensions but stressed the positive prospects the cafe and bar offer, especially during the day for parents and shoppers.
Overall, the reopening of The Birch Brewhouse is met with anticipation for a new focal point in Birchgrove. With plans to cater to various preferences, from daytime cafe visitors to evening craft ale enthusiasts, the establishment aims to rejuvenate the local scene and provide a welcoming space for the community.
