The UK Foreign Office has released a travel advisory for Turkey following a terrorist attack at an aerospace facility that resulted in four fatalities. The incident occurred in Kahramankazan, located approximately 40km from Ankara, on Wednesday. British citizens in the vicinity are urged to follow local authorities’ instructions and stay informed through the media.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice page to alert travellers of the situation. The advisory mentioned, “There has been a terrorist attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries’ facilities in Kahramankazan, 40km northwest of central Ankara, with a number of deaths and casualties reported. The security response is ongoing. If you are in the immediate area follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local media.”
Although Kahramankazan is not a prominent tourist destination like Istanbul or Antalya, and despite previous terrorist incidents in Turkey, most visits to the country occur without issues. Turkey is generally regarded as a safe and hospitable destination for tourists. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that the attack targeted TUSAS, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries. The assailants reportedly used firearms and explosives during the assault.
The FCDO advises travellers in Turkey to remain vigilant, especially when visiting public areas, religious sites, airports, or attending large events. The risk of violence and conflict is heightened near the borders with Syria and Iraq, with occasional clashes between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Turkish forces in certain regions. TUSAS is known for its production of aircraft, UAVs, and defence structures crucial for military operations.
Following the attack, which involved gunfire and explosions, Turkish security forces engaged the perpetrators, resulting in casualties. British nationals near the affected area are advised to stay updated on the situation through local media reports. While Turkey has faced security challenges in the past, incidents like these highlight the importance of remaining cautious and informed while travelling.
In response to the incident, the FCDO continues to monitor the situation and provide necessary updates to ensure the safety of British citizens in Turkey. Travellers are encouraged to follow official guidance and take precautions during their stay in the country.
