Foreign Office new travel warning for winter sun holiday spots popular with Brits

Holidaymakers planning winter sun getaways to popular destinations have been issued a cautionary travel warning by the UK Foreign Office. The Government agency has recently updated its advice for several countries, including Egypt and Morocco. As of September 29, over 17 countries received new warnings in light of Israel’s airstrikes on Lebanon following missile attacks on their territory. The escalating conflict prompted the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) to issue advice, highlighting the potential risks for travellers in the affected regions.

The travel advisory extends to Lebanon, which shares borders with Syria and Israel and is in proximity to Cyprus and Egypt. Likewise, the warning encompasses the United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly Dubai, a sought-after destination for British tourists in search of warm climates during winter. Other countries under the updated alert include Tunisia, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar. The FCDO emphasises monitoring travel advice and media reports due to the rapidly changing situation in these regions.

Travellers are strongly advised to check the latest travel advice before embarking on trips to countries flagged with warnings. Tour operators will provide full refunds for holidays in case the FCDO advises against all travel to a specific destination. However, cancelling a trip without a travel warning may not guarantee refunds. The ongoing conflict has prompted airlines to alter flight routes, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic now avoiding airspace over the Middle East.

The recent developments stem from Israel’s airstrike that resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. Hezbollah has declared readiness for combat in response to the Israeli offensive. Lebanon has witnessed over 1,000 fatalities, including a significant number of women and children, due to strikes in the past two weeks. The current travel caution serves as a reminder for holidaymakers to stay informed and exercise vigilance when travelling to these regions. The Foreign Office’s guidance underscores the importance of keeping abreast of developments and adhering to safety recommendations to ensure a secure and enjoyable travel experience.
