Football fans call for better away game scheduling and VAR ban, finds new study

Football fans are urging for improvements in the scheduling of away games and a ban on VAR, according to a new study reported by Wales Online. A survey of 2,000 football enthusiasts highlighted various changes they would like to see in the professional game. Over half of the respondents expressed a desire for better away match scheduling, citing inconveniences such as kick-off times and restrictions on drinking at the seats. Additionally, 67% of fans felt overlooked by football authorities, with ticket availability being a concern for dedicated supporters missing out on live matches.

The study, conducted by UK shot brand Fireball, showcased the importance of enhancing the away game experience for fans. Notably, 29% of participants felt that clubs should provide more travel support for away games. Additionally, the survey revealed that safe standing in stadiums, the ability for managers to challenge refereeing decisions, and the creation of an ‘All-Star’ game were among the changes fans wished to see in football.

Former England player and Salford City co-owner, Paul Scholes, surprised four fans with a helicopter ride to their team’s match against Newport County. This initiative aimed to emphasise the value of fans’ support, especially during away fixtures. Furthermore, the study noted that fans attend an average of 11 live games annually, with 70% agreeing on the importance of evolving football rules in line with modern technology and playing styles.

Lorenzo Farronato, spokesperson for Fireball Whisky, emphasised the significance of prioritising fans’ match-day experiences, particularly for away games involving long journeys and high costs. The study also highlighted fans’ desire for innovative features such as half-time musical performances and increased fan involvement in the game.

The research outcomes provided valuable insights into fans’ preferences and expectations within football. As the sport continues to evolve, addressing the concerns and suggestions of supporters can contribute to a more engaging and enjoyable football experience for all involved.
