A reckless driver in South Wales flipped off police officers before causing a car crash in a residential area. Shaun Venables, who was driving under the influence and without insurance, aggressively overtook an unmarked police car at high speed, reaching 50mph in a 20mph zone. Despite police efforts to stop him, Venables defiantly gestured at them and continued to drive recklessly through junctions, almost losing control of his vehicle multiple times.
The dramatic incident unfolded in broad daylight around 10.30 am on June 29, 2024, on Harris Avenue. The pursuit by police ended when Venables crashed into a fence at Trebanog Crescent, causing about £100 worth of damage to the property owner. Following the crash, Venables fled on foot from the scene, but was later apprehended by officers. It was revealed that the car he was driving was registered in his name, but he was uninsured to operate the vehicle.
During a court hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on January 6, 2025, it was disclosed that Venables tested positive for more than double the legal alcohol limit, with 80 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the 35 micrograms limit. Additionally, a search of the car uncovered a small bag of cocaine, a Class A drug, although there was no evidence to suggest he had used it before driving that day.
In the courtroom, 35-year-old Venables admitted to charges of dangerous driving, possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated, and driving without insurance. His defence lawyer, Mari Watkins, highlighted Venables’ acknowledgment of his alcohol abuse issues and expressed his genuine remorse for his actions. However, Judge Simon Mills condemned Venables’ behaviour as highly dangerous, selfish, and outrageous, rejecting the notion that his actions were influenced by an earlier argument.
Judge Mills sentenced Venables to 15 months in prison for dangerous driving and an additional two-month term for exceeding the alcohol limit. In conjunction with the custodial sentence, Venables was also disqualified from driving for three years, with a further seven-month extension. The judge emphasised that Venables was fortunate not to face more severe repercussions for his actions, cautioning him against endangering lives on the road.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by drink driving and reckless behaviour behind the wheel. It underscores the importance of responsible driving practices and the severe consequences that can result from driving under the influence of alcohol. Venables’ case is a cautionary tale of the potential devastation that can occur when individuals make reckless choices on the road, putting themselves and others at risk. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic laws and driving responsibly to ensure the safety of all road users.
