Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is closely monitoring the situation as a combination of high tides and weather conditions heighten the risk of flooding in the region.

The current flood alerts, indicating “Flooding is possible – be prepared”, are set to remain in force until Tuesday, coinciding with high tides anticipated on March 31. While NRW continues to assess the situation, local coastal areas and nearby roads are warned to be cautious as flooding and travel disruptions are possible. Despite these alerts, the overall five-day flood risk level for Wales is currently considered “very low”.

At present, there are no flood warnings necessitating immediate action. The five alerts were issued on Sunday at 2 pm and cover the following areas:
– Carmarthenshire coast: Stretching from Pendine to Hendy, east of Llanelli, where flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected.
– Coast from Aberthaw to Severn Bridge: Anticipating flooding of low-lying areas and roads, caution is advised along beaches, coastal paths, and roads.
– Usk Estuary: Similar warnings of flooding for low-lying land and roads, emphasizing caution along coastal footpaths and roads close to the estuary.
– Wye Estuary, Monmouthshire: Facing the risk of flooding for low-lying land and roads with a call for vigilance in proximity to the estuary.
– North Gower Coast: Coastal footpaths, roads, and low-lying areas require careful attention, as noted by NRW.

Spring tides, characterized by significant fluctuations between high and low water levels, occur around every full and new moon alignment when solar and lunar gravitational forces combine. The National Tidal and Sea Level Facility explains that spring tides following the equinoxes in March and September are slightly larger. NRW offers flood warnings through their website and Floodline helpline for further information and updates.
