On the evening of January 31, CCTV footage captured Dighton arriving on the opposite side of the road to the police station carrying a large rucksack and a pole. He then proceeded to light a firebomb and throw it at a police van, attempting to ignite it with a second bottle of propellant when the bomb failed to detonate. Dighton, wearing body armour, then proceeded to smash the van’s windows with the wooden pole before turning his attention to another vehicle.

When challenged by officers, Dighton refused to drop his weapon and made concerning statements indicating he was frustrated and had ill intentions. Despite being Tasered, he continued to attack police officers, causing injuries that required hospital treatment for two of the officers. Throughout his arrest, Dighton expressed anti-government sentiments but denied intending to murder a police officer.

During the court hearing at London’s Old Bailey, Dighton chose to represent himself and refused legal representation despite facing potentially life in prison. His statements indicated a deep-rooted dissatisfaction with authority, specifically the use of authority he had experienced since a young age. Dighton’s actions were described as premeditated and carried out with the intent to cause harm to police officers due to his anti-government beliefs.

The area surrounding Talbot Green police station was cordoned off as investigations and security measures were implemented following the attack. Counter Terrorism Policing Wales led the investigation in collaboration with South Wales Police and the Crown Prosecution Service. The severity of Dighton’s offences led to a characterization of the incident as having potential terrorist connections, given his espoused anti-government ideology.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Williams commended the swift and brave response of the South Wales Police officers who prevented further harm during the incident at Talbot Green police station. Despite the shocking nature of the attack, he expressed gratitude for the support received from the local community. Chief Superintendent Stephen Jones praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved, especially considering recent incidents highlighting the unpredictable nature of police work.

Dighton was remanded into custody pending his sentencing on May 13, acknowledging the gravity of his actions. The court proceedings shed light on the events of that fateful evening and the concerning motivations behind Dighton’s violent behaviour. The community is reassured of continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies to address such threats and ensure the safety of both officers and residents in the area.

The case serves as a disturbing reminder of the risks police officers face in the line of duty and highlights the importance of ongoing vigilance and support for those who protect and serve the community. As the investigation continues and preparations are made for sentencing, the focus remains on upholding justice and maintaining the security of all individuals in the region.
