First images show the £100m new tram route that will run through the middle of Cardiff

First images have been unveiled of the proposed new tram line in Cardiff, which comes with a hefty price tag of £100 million. The tram route is set to connect Cardiff Central railway station to Cardiff Bay and will be part of the ambitious Cardiff Crossrail project. The initial phase of the project includes plans for a new two-platform tram station at Cardiff Central and upgrades to the existing rail line linking Cardiff Bay to Queen Street Station.

The artist impressions, created by Cardiff-based architectural firm The Urbanists, showcase how the tram route could look through prominent areas like Callaghan Square. The new Bay line is also undergoing electrification and upgrades to accommodate the Crossrail services. Additionally, a dedicated third platform is in the works to support the new tram network. The project is part of the broader South Wales Metro rail electrification initiative.

While the final budget for the initial phase is yet to be confirmed, it is expected not to exceed the £100 million mark. Future plans for the project include extending the tram route to Pierhead Street, which could potentially cost around £40 million. However, this extension is contingent on securing further funding. The long-term goal is to expand the Crossrail network to eventually connect with the South Wales Mainline and the proposed Cardiff Parkway station.

Cardiff Council has secured £100 million for the Crossrail project through a successful bid to the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, with the condition that the Welsh Government matches it with an additional £50 million. The next steps involve finalizing funding commitments and agreements with various stakeholders, such as Network Rail, for the construction of dedicated tram stations.

If all agreements are reached as planned, the new tram network could be operational by late 2028, providing a vital link between the city centre and Cardiff Bay. Public consultations are ongoing to gather feedback on the proposed designs and ensure community input in shaping the project. The Cardiff Crossrail initiative aims to improve connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors, with plans for future expansions to further enhance transportation options in Cardiff.
