Fireworks fears have been raised in a Welsh town as extra police powers are implemented to address youths causing disturbances ahead of bonfire night. The concerns arose following an incident involving an unsafe bonfire, prompting authorities to take action. A dispersal order was issued for the Nant-Y-Fedw area of Abercynon, just one day before fireworks displays were scheduled to mark Guy Fawkes night.
South Wales Police responded to reports of anti-social behaviour in the area after the local authority issued an enforcement notice to remove the unsafe bonfire. Superintendent Michelle Conquer highlighted the importance of safety, stating that the fire service had deemed the bonfire hazardous and potentially containing harmful items. Consequently, local residents were urged to vacate the area to allow the fire service to address the situation for everyone’s well-being.
The dispersal order, authorised under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, applies to individuals aged 10 and above and will be effective for 48 hours from 5pm on Monday, November 4, to 5pm on Wednesday, November 6. This order empowers the police to remove individuals aged 10 to 16 to their homes or a place of safety, as well as seize any property suspected of contributing to anti-social behaviour.
In addition to the dispersal order, officers will conduct high visibility patrols in the community to provide reassurance to the public and address any concerns promptly to maintain a sense of safety among residents. The primary goal is to ensure that residents feel secure during the festive period surrounding bonfire night.
The initiative underscores the importance of upholding safety standards and preventing potential risks associated with unsanctioned bonfires and fireworks displays. By taking proactive measures and implementing strict enforcement policies, authorities aim to mitigate the impact of anti-social behaviour and safeguard the well-being of the community.
This proactive approach by the police serves as a reminder of the significance of adhering to regulations and prioritising public safety, especially during events that involve heightened fire risks and potential hazards. By working collaboratively with local authorities and emergency services, communities can better prepare for celebratory occasions and minimise the occurrence of anti-social incidents that may compromise safety and security.
As bonfire night approaches, the town of Abercynon remains vigilant in enforcing necessary measures to address anti-social behaviour and mitigate potential risks associated with unsafe practices. Through enhanced police powers and community engagement, efforts are being made to uphold safety standards and promote a secure environment for all residents during this festive period.
