Family of Mitchell Powell hold heart screening day in hope of preventing tragedy

The family of Mitchell Powell, who tragically passed away during a double heart valve replacement surgery, is hosting a heart screening day with the aim of preventing further heart-related tragedies. Mitchell Powell, a 26-year-old father from Waun Wen in Swansea, succumbed to cardiac arrest during the surgery at Bristol Heart Institute in February 2021. Mitchell, who had undergone over 20 heart operations due to a congenital heart condition, was dependent on a pacemaker and was informed early on that he would require a complete heart transplant in his early adulthood. Following his untimely demise, his family established the Mitchell Powell Foundation in his honour, continuing his charitable work and raising funds to aid families of young individuals confronting life-altering health issues.

The Mitchell Powell Foundation, created to perpetuate Mitchell’s altruistic legacy, organised an event at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill in collaboration with Calon Hearts. The event aimed to screen the hearts of 60 individuals, with half under 25 years old and the other half over 25. Typically costing £280 per person, the screening was provided free of charge, involving four cardiologists conducting a comprehensive assessment of participants’ hearts to identify any anomalies. Mitchell’s sister, Kirsty Davies Powell, expressed the importance of preventing heart issues rather than merely responding to them post-occurrence. The overwhelming response to the event indicates a heightened awareness among people about the significance of heart health, inspired by Mitchell’s story.
