### South Wales Family Reeling After Young Cyclist Struck by Car and Left Injured
A family from Blackwood, South Wales, has been left devastated following a distressing incident in which their ten-year-old son was struck by a car and left lying injured in the road. The event, which unfolded during the school Easter holidays, has raised significant concerns about road safety, particularly regarding children and cyclists.
Cristina Micu, a mother of three, recounted the harrowing morning of 16 April, when her son Louis ventured out on his bicycle along Bloomfield Road. At just after 10.30am, what began as a carefree ride quickly turned into a nightmare, as Louis was struck from behind by a passing car. “Louis told me he felt immense pain instantly and was left in the road, completely helpless,” Cristina shared.
The aftermath was a blur of panic and anguish for the Micu family. A family friend, who happened to be nearby, immediately recognised Louis and phoned Cristina. “I am still in complete shock. When I received the call, I had no idea what to do or where to go. When I arrived at the scene, I saw my child bleeding and unable to walk, visibly in deep shock, bruised, and shaking,” she recalled.
According to Cristina, after the incident, Louis was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention. Hospital staff were able to confirm that, miraculously, his injuries were minor. Cristina reflected on how the situation could have been far worse, saying, “It’s a miracle he wasn’t more seriously hurt. He could have died. We consider ourselves lucky in the midst of this horror.”
Yet, the emotional impact is proving far more difficult to heal. Cristina disclosed that Louis has been suffering from nightmares since the crash, no longer wants to be left alone, and often wakes up at night crying. Prior to the incident, cycling had been one of Louis’s greatest passions, but now the family is left wondering if he will ever regain his confidence on two wheels. “He loved cycling so much. It’s heartbreaking to hear him say he doesn’t know if he’ll ever ride again,” Cristina added.
What has further compounded their anguish is the lack of contact from the driver involved. Cristina reported that the driver apologised at the scene, saying “I didn’t see you,” but has not reached out since to check on Louis’s welfare or to enquire about the outcome of the hospital visit. For Louis’s parents, this silence has been difficult to accept.
Ten days since the incident, Louis continues to struggle with persistent pain. His parents were recently compelled to take him back to hospital, where medical staff advised that an MRI scan may be required if his symptoms persist. The family remains determined to get answers. Cristina stated, “I want to see the CCTV and understand what really happened. I appeal to anyone who may have dashcam footage from that morning to contact us or Gwent Police.”
Gwent Police have confirmed they were called to Bloomfield Road at around 10am on 16 April following a report of a road traffic collision. Officers conducted CCTV and dashcam enquiries at the time, and investigations are ongoing.
Cristina has shared Louis’s story publicly, hoping that it will serve as a wake-up call for drivers to take extra care, especially where children and young cyclists are at risk. As the family waits for further information and recovery for their son, their hope is that this incident will encourage others to reflect on the real-life consequences of road neglect and inspire greater vigilance on the roads in future.
