An expert has highlighted the importance of storing certain foods in the fridge to ensure their freshness and safety. Common food items such as ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, when stored in the cupboard, can lead to bacterial growth. It is recommended to place them in the fridge if they are not used frequently to avoid spoilage.
Similarly, lemons, oranges, and limes have a longer shelf life when refrigerated as the cooler temperature prevents them from drying out. Red wine, once opened, should be sealed and refrigerated to slow down the oxidation process and maintain its taste for up to five days.
Guidance from the Food Standards Agency suggests refrigerating eggs to protect against salmonella and preserve their quality. Butter, while permissible at room temperature for a short time, is best stored in the fridge to maintain its spreadable texture. Apples, known for producing ethylene gas that speeds up ripening in other fruits, benefit from refrigeration to slow down this process.
Jam, marmalade, cream liqueur, and pure maple syrup are also advised to be stored in the fridge to prevent spoilage and maintain their freshness.
