Expat in Spain floods says they’re ‘surrounded by water’ as death toll soars past 150

An expat living in Spain amid the devastating floods has spoken out about the dire situation in which they find themselves. As the death toll surpasses 150 and Spain begins three days of mourning, rescue workers are tirelessly searching for victims in submerged vehicles and buildings. John Fahy, a 55-year-old teacher from Cullera, Valencia, has described how his town is now completely surrounded by water, leaving residents trapped without access to essential supplies.

Mr. Fahy shared that local supermarkets are devoid of food, with slim chances of restocking anytime soon. The death toll in the eastern Valencia region has risen to 155, with additional casualties reported in Castilla La Mancha and southern Andalusia, including a British victim. The ongoing rescue operations have been challenging, with the army only recently gaining access to certain areas where more bodies are being discovered.

Describing his harrowing journey home during the storm, Mr. Fahy recalled driving through intense rain at a slow pace, with treacherous conditions hindering his progress. He highlighted the fear and uncertainty that gripped him as he made his way through the deluge, emphasising the imminent danger that residents faced during the severe weather event.

The catastrophic floods in Spain have left behind a trail of destruction, with cars stacked on top of each other, trees uprooted, and power lines brought down. Bridges have been swept away, and roads rendered unrecognisable, making rescue and recovery efforts all the more challenging. With multiple individuals still unaccounted for, there is a sombre acknowledgment that the death toll may rise as more victims are discovered.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente mentioned the grim reality of finding deceased individuals inside some vehicles, underscoring the severity of the situation. Experts have pointed to climate change as a likely factor in the unprecedented rainfall that has led to the catastrophic flooding. The capacity of a warmer atmosphere to hold more moisture has amplified the intensity of the rainfall, contributing to the widespread devastation witnessed in Spain.
