Exact Day Heatwave Will Return in ‘Split’ Thunderstorm Forecast
In an interesting weather forecast this week, the UK will experience a divide in conditions as areas in the south brace for heavy downpours, while western Scotland anticipates a heatwave. Here are the key points to note:
- Southern England expected to face thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and hail
- More than 50mm of rainfall could hit certain areas within two hours
- Yellow warning for heavy rain issued for south-east England and as far west as Taunton
- Western Scotland may see temperatures up to 26C on Friday and Saturday
- Development of a split in weather patterns between the north and south regions
The Met Office warns of sudden flooding in southern areas like Birmingham, Peterborough, and Norwich, leading to potential road closures and transportation disruptions. Meanwhile, the north is predicted to have more settled conditions with warmth in western Scotland nearing heatwave thresholds.
Oli Claydon from the Met Office mentioned, “We could even be fringing on the possibility of nudging into heatwave thresholds in parts of western Scotland by the end of the week.”
The criteria for a heatwave include three consecutive days of maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave threshold. For Scotland, this threshold is 25C. Despite daytime warmth, overnight temperatures may drop significantly, with rural Scotland possibly reaching lows of 7C on Friday night.
In terms of specific temperatures, the southeast of England might peak at 27C on Friday. However, this warmth could be accompanied by cloud cover and rainfall. The current temperatures are reported to be around average for this time of year, according to Mr. Claydon.
Overall, the UK is gearing up for contrasting weather phenomena, with some areas preparing for heavy storms while others look forward to a late summer heatwave spell. Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts to plan your activities accordingly!
