The manager of a Welsh football team has been handed a lifetime ban from the sport following a shocking incident where he physically attacked a linesman during a match in April 2024. Robert Williams-Jones, the ex-football manager, lashed out in anger during a game between Amlwch Town FC and CPD Penrhyndeudraeth in the North Wales Coast West Premier League fixture. The match, which ended in a heavy 8-0 defeat for his team, took a violent turn when Williams-Jones punched the young linesman, causing him to fall to the ground.
The despicable act was captured on CCTV, leading to Williams-Jones pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. At his sentencing at Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court, the 43-year-old was handed a 24-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and pay £1,000 in compensation to the victim. The North Wales Coast Football Association has enforced a permanent ban on Williams-Jones, ensuring he will never be involved in coaching again.
A spokesperson for the NWCFA affirmed that there is no tolerance for such acts of aggression or violence in football within their association. The disciplinary panel imposed a hefty fine of £3,000 on Williams-Jones along with a £50 cost order. Amlwch Town FC, the team involved in the incident, received a fine of £2,500, with £2,000 of it suspended for 12 months as a stern reminder of the consequences of such behaviour on and off the field.
In response to the incident, Penrhyndeudraeth FC issued a statement expressing their disappointment that such violence marred what should have been a celebratory victory. Amlwch Town FC, Williams-Jones’ former club, swiftly distanced themselves from the manager and issued an apology to Penrhyndeudraeth and the linesman involved. The club acknowledged the gravity of the situation and expressed deep sadness over the events that transpired.
The NWCFA has concluded the matter, stating that they will not tolerate any form of abuse or violence within football and will take decisive action against any perpetrators. This zero-tolerance approach serves as a stark warning to all individuals involved in the sport that such reprehensible actions will not go unpunished.
The incident sheds light on the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and respect on and off the field. It serves as a reminder to all participants in football, from players to coaches, that violent behaviour has no place in the beautiful game. The NWCFA’s swift and decisive action in banning Williams-Jones serves as a strong deterrent to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Football is meant to be a platform for camaraderie, competition, and joy, and acts of violence only tarnish the spirit of the game. As the football community condemns such behaviour, it reinforces the values of fair play, respect, and integrity that are integral to the sport. The lifetime ban serves as a stark reminder that actions have consequences, and those who cross the line will be held accountable.
