European ‘Visa’ Rules Cause Confusion for Holidaymakers
Recent changes to European travel regulations are causing confusion among holidaymakers, with warnings issued for those planning trips to popular destinations in Europe including France, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal. The European Travel Authorisation (ETA) came into effect on April 2 for European citizens travelling to the UK, requiring them to obtain a ‘pass’ to enter the country. Similarly, UK travellers will soon face similar rules when visiting 30 European countries, where they will also need to pay for entry. Although the implementation of these rules, known as ETIAS, has been delayed by 18 months, the current confusion has created opportunities for scammers to target unsuspecting travellers through fake websites.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has highlighted the risks posed by these fraudulent sites and urged travellers to exercise caution. Presently, European citizens only need their passport to enter Europe, with the ETA being the first of three upcoming changes affecting travel between the EU and the UK. The European Entry/Exit System (EES) is set to commence in October, aiming to modernise border controls for non-EU travellers entering the Schengen Area by collecting biometric data such as fingerprints and facial scans. On the other hand, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will introduce electronic travel authorisation for non-EU travellers entering the Schengen Area, although its implementation has been delayed until late 2026.
Graeme Buck, the director of communications at ABTA, emphasised the need for travellers to understand the evolving regulations to avoid potential issues in the future. While the ETA is currently the only requirement for European visitors to the UK, UK travellers heading to Europe this summer will not face any immediate changes. ABTA advises against applying for ETIAS prematurely to prevent falling victim to fraud and financial losses.
