Escaped emu found dead days after disappearing from animal sanctuary

An emu named Irwin, known for being a “jolly emu who loved cuddles,” has been found dead just seven days after disappearing from an animal sanctuary. The Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary in Wiltshire made the heartbreaking announcement that Irwin’s body was discovered nearby on Sunday, indicating that he may have fallen into a river during the night. Despite emus being strong swimmers, the combination of dark conditions and recent rainfall likely posed challenges for Irwin. The sanctuary expressed their deep sorrow over the loss, noting how much Irwin meant to both their volunteers and the wider community.

In a statement, the sanctuary shared, “Whatever the case we sincerely hope Irwin didn’t suffer for long. The thought of his struggle will always be with us. His absence always felt.” They also extended their gratitude to everyone who had shown support during the search for Irwin. The sanctuary had shared images of emu excrement and feathers in their efforts to locate the missing bird, who was around seven-years-old. Emus, belonging to the same bird family as the ostrich and kiwi, are the second-largest living bird globally, after the ostrich.

Describing Irwin’s personality, the sanctuary’s statement continued, “Irwin was a jolly emu who loved cuddles, and especially cold showers during summer whereupon he would roll over before standing up and shaking himself dry before looking to us for another dowsing.” The sanctuary painted a picture of Irwin as a playful bird who enjoyed chasing younger emus until they held their ground. Irwin is survived by other emus at the sanctuary, named Cha Cha, Emmy, Momo, and Doble, who continue to live happily in his memory.

The sanctuary highlighted that emus are resilient creatures and can live up to around 25 years. They expressed their deep affection for Irwin, affirming that he will always have a place in their hearts. Despite the sadness of his passing, the sanctuary reflected on the joy and love that Irwin brought during his time at the Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary. Irwin’s legacy will endure as he lives on in the memories of those who cared for him and the animals he shared his home with.

Irwin’s untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the impact that animals can have on people’s lives and the deep bonds formed between humans and creatures in their care. The community’s outpouring of support during the search for Irwin reflects the value placed on every living being, no matter how big or small. Though Irwin may no longer be physically present, his spirit and the joy he brought to those around him will continue to resonate within the sanctuary and beyond. Irwin, the “jolly emu who loved cuddles,” has left behind a legacy of love and happiness that will endure for years to come.
