Empty former Cardiff pub site may be transformed into housing development
A long-abandoned pub site in Cardiff could see a new lease of life as a housing development. The Wolf’s Castle closed its doors in 2022 after 64 years of service, leaving landlady Angela Bloom and regular customers devastated. Since its closure, the building has stood empty and fallen into disrepair, attracting incidents of anti-social behaviour.
Cardiff Council has stepped in to propose a solution for the vacant site in Llanishen, which has been idle for two and a half years. Unable to maintain it as a licensed premises, the housing department took over the location. The council initiated a consultation on December 18, 2024, seeking input from local residents on the prospect of converting the historical site into housing.
The envisioned plan involves the demolition of the former pub and the construction of family accommodation in its place. While considering housing for the elderly, the council concluded that the area would benefit more from housing for families. The site’s history dates back to the 1800s when it was used as farmland, with remnants of a 19th-century farmhouse still preserved within the structure.
In July 2024, The Wolf’s Castle was included in the proposed Cardiff Local Heritage List by the council, aiming to protect and honour significant local buildings in the city. Efforts are underway to retain parts of the building deemed to hold historical value. Councillor Garry Hunt expressed disappointment over the prolonged vacancy of the site and highlighted ongoing concerns about anti-social behaviour in the area.
Councillors Bethan Proctor and Garry Hunt have been closely monitoring the development progress, acknowledging some legal actions taken in relation to the site. Despite challenges, the council remains optimistic about the potential transformation of the location and the positive impact it could have on the community. If all goes well, development on the site could commence in the near future.
In a bid to keep residents informed and engaged, Cardiff Council continues to champion transparency and community involvement in the decision-making process. The initiative to repurpose the former pub site reflects a proactive approach towards revitalising unused spaces for the benefit of local residents.
