New EU Rules Ban Eight Items from Being Brought Home from Holiday
Travellers from the European Union and other European countries are now facing new rules that prohibit the bringing in of certain items into the UK. Implemented by the UK Government on April 12, these measures aim to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease from abroad.
The banned items include meat from pigs, cows, sheep, and goats, as well as dairy products like milk, butter, cheese, and yoghurt. This restriction applies to sandwiches containing meats or dairy, as well as cured and raw meats, regardless of their packaging or if they were purchased at duty-free shops.
The specific list of prohibited items comprises pork, beef, lamb, mutton, goat, venison, sausages, and other related meat products, along with milk, butter, cheese, and yoghurt. These regulations encompass the whole EU region, including countries like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland.
However, personal imports from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man are exempt from these restrictions. Travellers are still allowed to carry fish, poultry, eggs, honey, and certain other animal products, as well as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds from the EU, Switzerland, or Liechtenstein.
Moreover, limitations extend to pet food items, barring the entry of pig, cow, sheep, goat, and deer products not intended for human consumption. Yet, travellers may bring up to 2kg per person of specialized pet food required for medical reasons, provided it is unrefrigerated before use and in sealed packaging from recognised brands.
Despite the absence of reported cases in the UK since the 2007 foot and mouth disease outbreak, recent incidents in Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany highlight the ongoing threat of the disease in Europe.
