Ebay scraps fees in bid to fight back against Vinted

Ebay has made a strategic move to scrap fees for private sellers across the majority of its categories, following the earlier introduction of free fashion selling. This decision by Ebay comes as a response to the growing competition from platforms such as Depop and Vinted. Sellers will no longer be required to pay final value or regulatory operating fees for items, with the exception of cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles.

The removal of sellers fees for fashion back in April has already shown positive results, with a significant increase in listings for popular items like jeans, shirts, and dresses. This move aims to not only boost sales but also contribute to reducing the number of items ending up in landfill. A survey conducted for Ebay revealed that in the UK, there are an estimated 294 million unused items that could potentially generate £9 billion in resale income.

Households across the UK seem to be hoarding valuable unused items, with 50% of them valuing these items between £50 and £300. Adult clothing, DVDs and CDs, and technology items were found to be the most commonly unused items. Interestingly, 56% of people sell their unwanted items to make money, while 47% view resale as a more sustainable option than disposing of them.

Ebay’s decision to drop fees across various categories is aimed at providing users with a more streamlined and secure platform. Kirsty Keoghan, Ebay UK’s general manager, stated that this change is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance the marketplace experience and cater to customer preferences. The move follows a similar initiative in Ebay’s Germany site last year, which resulted in attracting a larger number of new sellers and re-engaging inactive sellers, particularly in the electronics and collectibles categories.
