A drug dealer was found with up to £26,000 worth of cocaine in his bedroom after he drove off from police and injured an officer’s hand. Robbie Islam, 26, later claimed his car had been stolen but had not reported this to police. Islam was seen by police driving erratically through Treforest, near Pontypridd, in a black Mazda on November 14. He was followed by the police, who attempted to pull him over, but he chose to drive off at speed, colliding with the police car and injuring an officer’s hand. A passenger in Islam’s car was found with a mobile phone, which contained incriminating messages from a contact named “silver,” later identified as Islam.
Following the incident, officers traced the Mazda back to Islam’s mother’s residence in Ely, Cardiff. When confronted by the police, Islam claimed that his car had been stolen, despite not reporting it to the authorities. A search of Islam’s home unveiled 385g of cocaine with an estimated street value of £16,600 to £26,800, along with £880 in cash and packaging materials indicating drug distribution activities. Islam admitted to charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. The court learned that Islam had previous convictions for similar drug-related offenses and was also under a suspended sentence during his latest crimes.
In court, Islam’s defence lawyer, Andrew Kendal, explained that his client’s involvement in drug trafficking stemmed from personal struggles, including substance abuse and financial difficulties. Islam began by using cannabis and eventually resorted to drug supply to pay off debts accumulated due to his partner’s mental health issues. Nevertheless, Judge Paul Hobson sentenced Islam to four years and eight months in prison, with an additional driving ban of 50 months.
