Driving instructor’s ‘great way’ to pass your test first time

A driving instructor in Wales has shared a ‘great way’ to increase your chances of passing your driving test on your first attempt. With long waiting lists for driving lessons and tests, it is crucial to give yourself the best shot at passing.

The UK driving test consists of two main sections – a practical test and a theory test. The pass rate for the theory test has dropped significantly from 65% in 2007-2008 to just 44% by 2023. On the other hand, the average pass rate for practical tests is 48.4%. According to experts, August and April are the months with the highest pass rates for the theory test.

In 2023, out of 1.3 million individuals taking their theory test, 15% admitted to not preparing adequately and ‘winging it’ on the day of the exam. Yell experts sought advice from driving instructor Phil Gunney on why many learners struggle to pass the theory test and how they can better prepare for success, especially in August, a favourable month for passing the test.

The UK driving theory test includes a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception test, both of which need to be passed to obtain a full driving licence. Cheating on theory tests by learners has reportedly tripled in the past two years, while practical test waiting times can extend up to five months.

Phil highlighted that many learners struggle with the multiple-choice section of the theory test, which has a pass rate of just 59.7%, compared to the hazard perception test’s 81.5% pass rate. He advised learners to use apps and computer programs designed to help understand and practice the rules of the multiple-choice section to improve their chances of passing.

Tackling tricky questions is essential, with some questions tripping up a majority of learners, such as identifying reflective amber studs on a motorway. Phil explained that changes in road design have made such questions more challenging due to the difference in central reservation barriers and stud colours on modern roads.

To ace the theory test on the first attempt, learners are advised to thoroughly study the Highway Code, practice with apps, and develop a real-world understanding of the driving rules. Understanding the format of the test and questions, in addition to honing hazard perception skills, are key to passing successfully.

With the help of driving instructors like Phil Gunney and the wealth of resources available, learners can equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to pass their driving theory test and move closer to obtaining their full driving licence.
