Drivers in the UK are being urged to check their cars for spiders as the eight-legged creatures are on a quest for love during the mating season, which peaks from September to mid-October. These spiders, seeking suitable mates to reproduce with, are likely to invade homes and vehicles in search of nesting spots. However, this invasion poses a safety concern for drivers, as unexpected encounters with spiders in cars can lead to distractions and potentially dangerous situations on the road.
According to passenger safety experts, drivers could face penalties for reckless driving if they are found to be distracted by spiders while behind the wheel. Tim Maule, CEO and child safety expert at Diono, emphasised the importance of being vigilant, especially with children in the car, as unexpected spider encounters can cause stress and distractions that increase the risk of accidents.
To prevent spiders from taking up residence in cars, motorists are advised to conduct regular inspections, paying attention to areas where spiders are likely to hide, such as crevices and corners. Maintaining a clean car free of food debris and clutter can also deter spiders from settling in. Additionally, using scents that spiders find unpleasant, such as citrus, lavender, or cinnamon, may help in keeping them away.
Implementing ‘home hacks’ in vehicles, such as using certain scents or cleaning methods, can contribute to a spider-free environment and ensure safer travels for drivers and passengers alike. By following these preventative practices and staying vigilant, drivers can reduce the risk of encountering spiders while on the road during this active mating season.
