Drivers face 15-mile diversion as key road set for weeks of disruption

Drivers in Wales are in for a challenging period of disruption, facing significant delays as a key road undergoes essential maintenance works lasting over two months. Starting Monday night, the South Wales Trunk Road Agency will be replacing traffic signals and related infrastructure at the junction of the A40 with the A466 at Wye Bridge in Monmouth.

The nine-week project aims to upgrade the outdated traffic signals and infrastructure at the junction, with the goal of improving traffic flow once the work is completed. The maintenance will take place overnight from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Saturday, under temporary traffic lights. Additionally, there will be several closures on specific dates as outlined below.

Drivers can expect closures and diversions on key dates:
– October 23-26: A40 northbound and A466 Wye Bridge will be closed for three nights.
– October 28-30: A40 northbound and A466 Wye Bridge will be closed for two nights.
– October 30-November 2: A466 Wyebridge Street will be closed for two nights.
– November 4-9 and November 11-16: A466 Wyebridge Street will be closed for five nights.
– November 5-9 and November 11-15: A466 Wye Bridge will be closed for four nights.
– November 14-16: A40 northbound will be closed for two nights.

Emergency service vehicles will have access through the works, and pedestrian access will be maintained across Wye Bridge at all times. The public can view diversion maps on the Traffic Wales website. Throughout the closures, a banksman will assist pedestrians in crossing the bridge safely during specific operations.

The project aims to bring long-term benefits to road users, but motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays. Stay informed about the latest Welsh news by subscribing to our newsletter and joining our WhatsApp news community for breaking updates.
