In a reckless incident, Ali Farah, 31, was found to be more than three times over the legal drink-drive limit when he crashed into Jannat Sarees in Cardiff amid a police pursuit. The events unfolded in Clare Road, Grangetown, during the early hours of November 13, following Farah’s attendance at a house party where he had been drinking.
Driving a Vauxhall Crossland, Farah was initially spotted on the wrong side of the road in Clare Road, prompting police to attempt a stop in Neville Street. Despite being instructed to pull over, Farah swerved to avoid parked vehicles and accelerated away, initiating a pursuit.
Farah’s dangerous escapade saw him reach speeds of 62mph, weaving onto the wrong side of the road. The chase took him through Wellington Street, Albert Street, and Ninian Park Road before culminating in a collision with the shutters of Jannat Sarees.
Upon apprehension, Farah resisted arrest, prompting officers to use pava spray to subdue him. Later, it was revealed that he had a breath alcohol reading of 122mcg per 100ml, well above the legal limit of 35mcg per 100ml. The estimated damage to Jannat Sarees amounted to £4,700.
At Cardiff Crown Court, Farah pleaded guilty to charges of drink-driving and dangerous driving. Despite a previous conviction for affray, the court considered Farah’s role as the primary caregiver for his bedridden mother and elderly father. Recorder Alun Eynon-Evans sentenced him to 10 months in prison, suspended for 18 months. Additionally, Farah was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, a five-day rehabilitation activity, and pay £240 in compensation.
