Driver makes last minute decision but it cost a man’s life

An inexperienced HGV driver’s last-minute decision led to the tragic death of a motorcyclist on his way to work, a court in Nottingham heard. The driver of an Amazon Prime lorry, Matthew Wright, didn’t see motorcyclist Nigel Osler in his mirrors as he carried out a risky manoeuvre, resulting in a collision that ultimately claimed Mr. Osler’s life.

Nigel Osler, a 61-year-old grandfather from Derbyshire, suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was taken to the hospital, where his family had to make the heartbreaking decision to switch off his life support. In a poignant victim impact statement, his wife expressed the agony of letting him go with dignity and highlighted the devastating impact of his loss on their family.

The court convicted 45-year-old Wright of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced him to nine years in jail. Judge Stuart Rafferty KC acknowledged the irreparable loss caused by Wright’s actions, emphasizing that no sentence could bring back Mr. Osler. The prosecution detailed how Wright’s impulsive decision to attempt a dangerous U-turn at a junction led to the fatal collision, despite Mr. Osler riding safely and lawfully on his motorcycle.

Wright, a father of two with an otherwise clean record, expressed deep remorse for his actions, with his defence highlighting his enduring guilt and lack of previous convictions. Mr. Osler’s family released a statement noting the profound impact of their loss and the need for drivers to consider the consequences of their decisions on the road.

Collision investigator Georgina Luke highlighted the tragic consequences of Wright’s dangerous driving, emphasizing the need for all drivers to exercise caution and consideration for others on the road. The court also handed Wright an 11-year driving disqualification in addition to his prison sentence.

The family and friends of Mr. Osler shared their gratitude for the support received and urged all road users to reflect on the life-altering consequences of dangerous driving. The devastating loss of Nigel Osler serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving behaviour, echoing the sentiments of his loved ones left grappling with the enduring consequences of his untimely death.
