Driver denies ‘bare-faced lie’ after fatal collision
A driver accused of causing the death of another motorist in a “dangerous” overtaking manoeuvre has denied telling a “bare-faced lie” in a court in Wales. Dale Groves, 29, was driving a white Ford Ka when it collided with a black Renault Clio driven by Gareth Davies in Fochriw Road, Merthyr Tydfil. The incident, which resulted in the tragic death of Mr Davies, occurred on April 13, 2023. Groves, from Alfred Street, Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, acknowledged causing death by careless driving but refutes the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
During the trial at Newport Crown Court, the prosecutor described the case as “sad and disturbing.” The court heard that the collision took place at 5:36 am near the junction with Biffa Waste Management, Trecatti. Mr Davies, who worked as a heavy goods vehicle driver for Allen Price, often drove his work lorry to and from the Biffa site where he was heading on the morning of the incident.
Groves admitted to making a “massive mistake” that led to Mr Davies’ death but denied providing false information to the police.
