Dramatic Moment Beachgoers Flee into the Sea as Huge Cliff Collapses
This is the dramatic moment beachgoers had to flee into the sea as a huge cliff collapsed onto the sand. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Sidmouth, Devon, at the Jacob’s Ladder end of the beach. At 4.25pm, the cliff gave way, resulting in a massive dust cloud billowing into the sky. A photo from the scene shows two individuals running into the sea to avoid the collapsing cliffs.
According to eyewitness reports, it appeared that the individuals had no choice but to dash into the sea to escape the dust clouds. Following the collapse, the Sidmouth Lifeboat was launched for a shoreline search near Salcombe Mouth to ensure no one was swept into the sea. The East Devon District Council had previously warned that the cliffs in the area “pose a very real danger” and advised caution to visitors.
The council spokesperson emphasised the unpredictable nature of rock falls and landslides, highlighting the risk of serious injury or fatality. They urged the public to exercise care around the soft rock cliffs of East Devon. The Coastguard issued guidelines recommending beachgoers maintain a distance from cliffs equivalent to their height, such as staying 20 metres away from a 20-metre-high cliff.
Sidmouth’s cliffs have a history of instability, with past collapses at East Beach and Jacob’s Ladder. In previous incidents, a significant cliff fall occurred at East Beach, and another rockfall near Jacob’s Ladder was witnessed. In March, a notable cliff fall led to reports of large boulders cascading onto the beach below, alarming both locals and tourists.
The authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and safety measures when visiting coastal areas prone to cliff collapses. Beachgoers are encouraged to follow guidelines to minimise risks and stay safe while enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline.
