‘Don’t eat’ two types of food when you have XEC Covid or sore throat warns doctor

Dr Gareth Nye, a senior lecturer at Chester Medical School, has issued a warning about specific foods to avoid when suffering from a sore throat or battling Covid. While it may be tempting to turn to comfort foods like chocolate or cheese and crackers for relief, certain treats could actually make symptoms worse. Dr Nye advises against consuming anything “dry or hard,” such as biscuits or crunchy cereals, as they can exacerbate throat pain. In addition, fizzy drinks or spicy foods may irritate the throat membrane, leading to increased discomfort. Some individuals also find that dairy, including chocolate, can worsen a sore throat by coating the throat and causing mucus buildup, resulting in more frequent coughing episodes.

According to the Mirror, Dr Nye emphasises that coughing can lead to further damage to the throat and heightened discomfort. He recommends avoiding foods that are difficult to swallow and opting for liquid nourishment instead. Dr Nye suggests that easily consumable foods like soups and smoothies, which are rich in essential vitamins and minerals, can support the body’s immune response in fighting off infections. Cold drinks or ice-based treats can also help numb the throat and provide relief from discomfort.

The advice from Dr Nye comes in light of concerns about the XEC Covid variant, which presents symptoms such as a sore throat, cough, fever, and nausea. To combat seasonal bugs like Covid or a sore throat, Dr Nye highlights the importance of maintaining adequate nutrition by including fruits, vegetables, and high-protein foods like eggs in one’s diet. Dr Nye stresses the significance of listening to the body’s signals as it fights off infections. He recommends managing symptoms through rest, staying hydrated, and ensuring a source of essential nutrients.

The Deputy Director of UKHSA, Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, acknowledges the normal genetic changes that viruses undergo over time. As the XEC variant raises concerns, it is crucial to heed advice from healthcare professionals like Dr Nye on managing symptoms effectively. Boosting the immune system through proper nutrition and hydration is essential in aiding the body’s natural defence mechanisms against infections. By being mindful of food choices and supporting the body’s needs, individuals can alleviate discomfort and promote quicker recovery from illnesses like Covid and sore throats.
