Dog trainer shares three easiest breeds to own – including one you wouldn’t expect

A dog trainer has shared insights on the easiest dog breeds to own, making pet ownership more manageable for enthusiasts. With dogs requiring regular walks, affection, and care, some breeds are inherently less demanding. Expert Will Atherton recently took to TikTok to offer recommendations on the most low-maintenance dogs he has encountered in his work as a canine behaviourist.

Atherton highlighted three breeds that stand out for their ease of ownership. The first surprising pick was the greyhound, often stereotyped as high-energy racing dogs. Contrary to popular belief, Atherton emphasised that greyhounds are actually “super lazy, super chill, super quiet dogs,” making them a convenient choice for many households.

Following the greyhound, Atherton mentioned the shih tzu breed. While these dogs can sometimes be perceived as yappy, Atherton assured that this behaviour is easy to manage, making shih tzus overall easy to live with due to their adaptable nature.

Lastly, Atherton singled out older Staffordshire Bull Terriers, affectionately known as ‘staffies,’ as potential ideal pets, particularly from rescue centres. Despite the breed sometimes facing unjust negative stereotypes, Atherton highlighted that older staffies in rescue centres can make wonderful companions due to their calm demeanour and compatibility with various lifestyles.

In contrast, Atherton disclosed the challenges he faces with Siberian Huskies, describing them as aloof and “drama queens.” He reiterated the importance of matching dog breeds with suitable lifestyles and care requirements, emphasising the need for a strong relationship based on guidance and direction between the owner and the dog.

While owning a dog entails various responsibilities, selecting the right breed can significantly impact the experience for both the pet and the owner. Atherton’s insights offer valuable guidance for those considering welcoming a furry companion into their homes.
