Dog owners in Wales are being advised to be vigilant of potential health hazards that can affect their pets during autumn, according to the PDSA. Gemma Renwick, a PDSA Vet Nurse, highlights the importance of being mindful of these autumn hazards to ensure the well-being of pets. Renwick suggests being cautious of dangers such as hidden sharp objects in piles of leaves, muddy puddles that can cause stomach upsets, and blue-green algae which is toxic to pets and can be fatal if ingested.
Harvest mites, bright orange tiny mites found in soil during late summer and autumn, are also a concern for pet owners. Infestations of harvest mites can cause pets to become itchy and uncomfortable, leading to red and inflamed skin. Additionally, pet owners are warned about Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI), a condition that can affect dogs in autumn and is characterised by symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, fever, and muscle tremors. If pets display such symptoms, it is recommended to seek veterinary advice promptly.
Furthermore, dog owners are cautioned against the toxicity of conkers, acorns, fungi, and mushrooms which can lead to various health issues if ingested by pets. With the onset of wetter and colder weather in autumn, slugs and snails carrying lungworm become more prevalent, posing a risk to pets. It is essential to ensure that de-worming products include protection against lungworm and to avoid the use of slug and snail pellets in gardens to prevent accidental ingestion by pets.
Insect bites and stings are common during early autumn, particularly around a pet’s face or paws. While most stings and bites are mild and can be managed at home, it’s important to be aware of potential risks. Moreover, unpredictable weather during autumn, including heavy rain and storms, can pose challenges for pet owners. Taking precautionary measures such as walking pets before expected storms, monitoring small pets in outdoor enclosures, and avoiding harmful plants in gardens are crucial for pet safety during this season.
