Doctor Who spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea films in Cardiff city centre

Doctor Who spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’, is currently in production in Cardiff city centre. Filming has been taking place at the City Arms pub on Quay Street, with renowned actor Russell Tovey spotted on set. Tovey, known for his roles in ‘Being Human’, ‘Gavin & Stacey’, and ‘Sherlock’, has been actively involved in the filming process. The presence of a UNIT van and actors portraying UNIT soldiers hints at the involvement of the government agency familiar to Doctor Who fans.

The new spin-off, confirmed this year, stars Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, both of whom have previous ties to the Doctor Who universe. The series, written by Russell T Davies and directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, is set to include classic Doctor Who creatures like the Sea Devils, last seen in the Thirteenth Doctor story ‘The Legend of the Sea Devils’. Notably, Jemma Redgrave will return as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, alongside other UNIT alumni reprising their roles.

Explaining the plot of the series at Comic Con 2024, Davies revealed a theme of conflict as he shared, “There’s a race that lives beneath the oceans – they wake up, and they see the state of the oceans that we have put it in. We have wrecked the place, and it is war – war on an epic scale.” Fans worldwide can anticipate the show’s release on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ internationally, as a co-production between the BBC and Disney Branded Television.

While the airdate of ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ is yet to be announced, the collaboration between the production teams promises an exciting addition to the Doctor Who universe. With familiar faces, new challenges, and a fresh storyline, the spin-off is set to captivate audiences with its exploration of the conflict between the land and the sea.
