Valdo Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, received a warning from a psychiatrist three years before a deadly knife rampage in Nottingham. He killed three people in 2020. His family learned of the warning after his sentencing and are calling for mental health service reforms. Calocane’s mother and brother described the mental health system as “broken”. His brother recalled the moment Calocane revealed hearing voices before the attacks. Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order. The Care Quality Commission is conducting a review of his care by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Calocane’s family and victims’ families are seeking a public inquiry for accountability and reforms.
