Docs warn mum that lumps in neck are ‘parasitic worms from her street cats’ but actual reason turns out to be even worse

Mum Shocked by Misdiagnosis of Lumps in Neck, Turns Out to be Cancer

Francesca Knee-Wright, a 34-year-old mother, was initially told by doctors that the lumps in her neck could be parasitic worms from her two adopted street cats. However, the reality turned out to be far more serious when it was discovered that she had blood cancer. Francesca first noticed a small lump on her neck in April, just three months after giving birth. Believing it was just a normal post-pregnancy change, she consulted her GP who suggested it was likely a gland and asked her to call back in two weeks.

As time passed, Francesca discovered two more lumps in her neck and sought an in-person examination from her doctor. To her horror, the GP speculated that the lumps could be a result of parasitic worms from her cats, causing infections in her large intestine. This unsettling revelation led Francesca to fear the worst but also to hope that it was anything but cancer. However, a subsequent ultrasound revealed a total of nine lumps in her neck, and in August, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

Despite the grim diagnosis, Francesca considers herself fortunate to have detected the lumps early on, as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma can spread rapidly throughout the body. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasised the importance of advocating for oneself when health concerns arise and stressed the need for prompt medical attention when dealing with potential lumps or abnormalities.

Expressing her frustration with the delay in diagnosis, Francesca highlighted the need for healthcare systems to prioritise timely investigations for patients presenting with concerning symptoms. She acknowledged the difficulty in questioning medical professionals but emphasised the significance of advocating for one’s health and seeking immediate attention when in doubt.

As she embarks on chemotherapy, Francesca expressed concerns about the impact of her condition on her young children and the challenges of hair loss associated with the treatment. To reclaim a sense of control, she shaved her head preemptively and initiated a fundraising campaign for the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs to children undergoing cancer treatment.

In her fundraising efforts, Francesca shared her mantra of resilience, stating, “Let’s be honest, I may be losing my hair but I’m not losing this fight.” She encouraged others not to ignore any lumps, regardless of size or location, underscoring the importance of early detection and proactive health advocacy.

Francesca’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination displayed in the face of adversity, inspiring others to prioritise their health and well-being amidst life’s challenges.
